No Smoking Signs

It is now the law that no smoking signs must be displayed in an easy view position and at every entrance to all smoke free premises. These signs must be at least 148x210mm in size and display. The no smoking symbol, which should be at least 70mm in diameter, must also say ‘no smoking’. It is against the law to smoke in these premises. A smaller ‘no smoking’ symbol, which must be at least 70mm in diameter, may be displayed at entrances used by member of staff, providing at least one of the 148x210mm notices  is displayed at larger premises.

Supplementary no smoking signs are used initially to help and encourage your smoke free and no smoking policy. At the UK Safety store, standard ‘no smoking’ signs are available in 450x600mm, 300x400mm, 200x300mm, 150x200mm and 300 x 100mm sizes. Also we can make no smoking signs to your exact requirements. These signs are available in rigid plastic and can be self adhesive, photo luminescent or brushed aluminum

Common Question about no smoking in buildings

Who will introduce the new law?

Local councils and health authorities are going to be enforcing the new law, as well as having the power to introduce enforcement officers. These may be environmental health officers, trading standards or local community support officers.

Will the law only apply to Cigarettes?

No, it applies to any substances that can be smoked such as manufactured cigarettes, pipes, water pipes, cigars and herbal cigarettes.

Does the law apply to staff smoking rooms?

Yes. However it is allowed to have a staff smoking shelter. If you decide to, you will need to ensure it is not in an enclosed area. You should take into consideration any other issues that may occur such as licensing and any planning or regulations to follow.

Can I smoke in my own car?

Yes you can. The new law does not interfere with smoking as a private act.

How does the law effect sharing a work vehicle with another smoker?

The law is enforced to protect everyone from second hand smoke including smokers and non-smokers. Smoking will only be allowed in work vehicles that are for individual use only as long as no other colleague makes use of this vehicle.

If I work from home will the law take any effect on me?

Once again the only way smoking can be permitted if working from home is if it is for sole use only. If other people are to be entering this work area the law will be enforced.

Does the law apply to premises and vehicles used for voluntary work?

Yes, the law applies to all work places.

If I use my car for voluntary work will the law be in place?

No. Vehicles used for the individual only will not be required to be smoke free.

Does the law apply to heritage buildings?

The new law is to enforce smoke free areas, so any premises that are required to be smoke free will require a no-smoking sign that complies with the new law. As long as the signs do not look out of place the law does allow the signs to be designed and displayed in ways to fit the building’s interior or exterior.
